These are examples of what the lyrics page and CD design looks like. One thing I have noticed is they all use one element throughout the whole album to make it seem like it's one whole thing. For example, the use of crosses or patterns. They also stick to one colour scheme like black with turquoise or white with blue/purple.
Digipaks Inspiration - Front & Back Cover
For the album cover the main image is very important and it has to be used in the right way to be effective. This means it can just be simple with a picture and font but it can also be changed up with the use of filters or shapes to make it more fascinating.
This is an example of just using a simple image and having the names/info on top. However, this means that the placement and colour choice of the font will have to be done right to look good.
This is something a little more interesting with the use of a silhouette of the artist and recreating the image with other images that links to the song. I could use this in my work by using the same idea but replace the images with balloons or graffiti to match the video.
This is slightly different to the other album covers but I like the use of filled shapes and circles to make the images more interesting and it will be good for our song because the colours will make it look quite cheerful which is what a Pop song need.
Lastly, I think this is one of my inspirational album covers because I like the use of triangles and how they played around with shapes by changing the placement and composition to create something that looks very modern and unique. I think this idea could be used because it links well with the graphics we have used in our video.
Digipaks Inspiration - Album Case
For the casing of my album, I would like to create something can could hold everything together like a an album case/box.
I like the cut outs of this casing and I think I could use this on my design by cutting out the artist's name so the font from the album cover shows. This will add texture as you touch it and create something different that will stand out from the other album covers.
As there are some graphics and graffiti incorporated in our video therefore I thought I could do the same to the album casing by using illustration or doodling. Ideally this could be done with colour to make it more like Pop but if the cover is already very colourful then I think it will be best to stick with less colour and more black and whites.
Like the first idea, this can be a cut out to give texture and have the album cover peek through but this time it will be the face of the artist that will show through instead her name.
Digipak Research - Jessie J 'Who You Are'
Jessie J's face is the main subject matter for the album cover which suggests her importance and dominance of the songs. The album cover is also a poster which makes it easier for customers to find it in store. The colour contrast between white and black with gold brings out her strong character along with the heavy, dark make-up, nails and outfit. The gold typeface also promotes her brand image as an attractive, playful and confident artist. Once again, her name is the biggest on the cover showing that she is important and powerful. The choice of using close up creates intimacy as she stares intensely at her audience making them drawn to her product.
The CD is simple but the use of white still allows the whole digipak to relate back to each other. Although the they did not use gold for Jessie J's name but the font itself still brings out the 'strong' appearance to be recognised.
Again the colour scheme of the contrasting black and white is used to keep the consistency. It is presented simply which makes it easy to be read and connotes Jessie J is very straight forward - a bold character.
Digipak Research - Rihanna 'Loud'
The front cover features a close up of Rihanna's face with the bold use of red hair and lips catches audience's attention especially the male gaze. Her plump outstanding lips also connote a hint seductiveness or love. Her skin is edited with a golden glow representing her health and wealth indicating that she is happy but also depicting the R&B style in her music through the idea of gold and money. This also apply to Goodwin's theory of using close-ups of the artist for the main attraction as that's what the audience is interested in - creating a stronger artist to consumer bond.
They have incorporated a picture of roses as the CD design which suggests the romance and how she is happy from her songs. This allows the audience to know that her songs are mostly about love and boys. The use of the colour cream with a pink undertone makes it girly and sweet.
In this photograph, she looks angelic and perfect to fit with the theme of romance and love. The baby pink tint overlay her body making her true colour to be hidden, showing a relationship to her vulnerability. The consistent use of pink and red makes the digipak appear as a whole package.
Digipak Research - Taylor Swift 'Red'
The background is defocused which makes us pay more attention to the artist and the shadows from her hat create mystery. She is looking down as though she is looking at the title 'Red' which draws our attention to focus on the bold writing. Her lips are also in red which help it stand out and create a further connection to her album. The choice of using red may be a representation of the title but it could also be an indication of love and passion which is usually the topic of her songs. The use of white for her name could signify her innocence. Overall the album is very simple with warm lighting that connotes simplicity in her songs and presents her genre as a country-pop artist well.
The songs are written all around the disk with production company and studio logos, title of the album and artist's name so you still have the necessary information even if you lose the other things in the digipak. This is also another way of recognition and branding by using the same font and colours. It has 5 red stripes across half of the disk which relates back to the album title to keep the consistency of the digipak.
The back of the album features a low angle shot of Taylor Swift which makes her appear to be more dominant - like she owns this album. Again mystery is added by the use of sunglasses hiding her eyes just like the shadows on the front cover. The songs are written in white with red stripes underneath which helps keep the consistency of the white and red colour scheme and the stripes from the CD.
Digipak Research - Katy Perry 'Teenage Dream'
The style of Katy Perry is immediate shown through the colours and the use of font with a sense of fantasy. The sweets-like type allows audience to get the idea that she is playful and likes to experiment which is her star image. In the front cover she is laying down on pink clouds or candy floss which signifies she is very delicate and fun despite her appearing to be a female sex symbol. This will increase her sales from more male target audiences. She is also naked which could suggest she is willing to show her audience everything she got. The use of pink, red and sky blue makes it feel cute and sweet.
The CDs are printed in the design of candy canes and doughnuts to relate back to the theme of deserts and sweet from the music video. Again the same colours are used to stick the colour scheme. These CDs do not have the artist's name or songs printed on them so when they are taken out of the digipak, it still won't be mistaken because of the strong use of its unique convention of the song.
The track-list is written in a bright red colour to make it stand out by using contrast against the bubble gum pink and blue colours. The font is also in a style that looks like sweets to relate back to the theme of the music video and song.
Third Photoshoot with Balloons
During our shoot for the performing scenes with balloon room, we also took some photos for our digipak and website. These photos will be suitably edited for the right platform with the use other codes and conventions, i.e. a barcode for the back of an album.
Second Photoshoot in the Park
When we were filming in the park for one of our narrative scenes, we also took some photos that could be used for our website or album booklet. These photos will help explain the narrative side of our music video rather than having it fully focus on the artist. Also the change of scenery/location will make our digipak or website much more interesting. However we do have to be careful with how we use these photos because the colours are very different to the other photos so it could break the consistency of the whole digipak or website.
First Photoshoot at Brick Lane
As we started filming for our music video, we have noticed that we will need some photos that could be used for our digipak and websites later on therefore we have took some photos with the same location and background as our footage so it looks like everything is related instead of using screenshots of our footage.
The photos were taken at Brick Lane with the use of bright, colourful graffiti/ street art. I think this location is perfect because it provides 'sass' from its urban art but also reveal a sense of happiness from the artist with her smile which creates an interesting contrast.
These photos were taken at Kingston, but it is also done with the same concept by using colourful graffiti.
