Problems that Came Up

There were some problems that came up as I worked on the website. One of the problems was creating pages. It did not go as smoothly as I wanted it to because at first I found it confusing to use - especially the different types of pages they have but as I used it more, the easier it got.

It was difficult to work out how link the images to pages like it did on the template and it took me awhile to find out that it was actually part of the photo album settings instead of on the pages itself. 

Another problem is that the login/sign up button does not match the theme of  my website therefore I had to create an entire page on my own with the login/sign up interface. 

When I was creating the backgrounds, I could not just use the original photo because the colours were too bright which made the text very difficult to see so I had to whiten the image on Photoshop by painting a layer of white over it and change the opacity to 25%. I also had to move the image so her face won't be covered when used on the page with other widgets.


This is an example of what I meant by the widgets covering the face. I already made sure I used the most suitable one but as you can see her face is still not fully shown.

Editing the Store

After finishing off the merchandises, the only step is to upload it on the website. At first I had a bit of trouble understanding how to use it because the items I have added did not show up on the page and I wasn't sure why. However, after playing around with options I have realised that it was because I needed to create a 'collection list' for the items to show up on the page.

Final Merchandise Designs

These are the outcome of the roses that I've created on Illustrator for these merchandises.


This is what the t-shirts looked like. I have decided to have 2 designs for the white t-shirts and only one for the black t-shirt because I thought white looked better with the bright roses.
I have also designed some photo cases, mugs and shoes.

Creating Merchandises

For merchandises, I created my own logo/design that's recognisable throughout all her merchandise. I incorporated the idea of roses in the design from the graffiti wall we filmed at in Kingston. I personally created the roses on Illustrator using the same colours from the graffiti.


I then used the design and placed them on images of white shoes, t-shirts, phone cases and others that I found on the internet with Photoshop.

Website Backgrounds

Website Backgrounds Editing

To make the website even more like an artist's website I needed to personalise the background to suit the theme and genre with the artist face. I used Photoshop to edit my photos and I found that all my photos are too bright to have the words on the website to show up so I had to make it seem washed out by painting a very light/transparent layer of white over the photos. 



Here is an example of the process on how I edited my backgrounds.

Website Initial Sketches/Ideas

After researching about websites I have came up with a rough idea of how I want my website to look like. Here are some rough sketches of how some of the pages will look like. 

For the home page, I would like the artist's name 'Matilda Childs' to be at the top in a bold san serif font so it stands out. This will also be like a 'title' that shows up on every single page acting as a logo for the artist. Instead of using one image of the artist I wanted to use a series of images and for each one of those images I would like it to link to a page.


These are more sketches of what the other pages will roughly look like - e.g. how things are laid out and what kind of features will be on each pages like the music page includes a Youtube video/music player or the store page having a cart and options for each merchandises displayed.

Digipak - Production Logo

I have realised every album or digipak contains the studio logo that the artist is under near the bottom of the back cover. I have also looked into creating my own production logo with our production name 'JLJ Productions'. I have used Universal Records' logo as an inspiration and created something similar. 



This is what I came up with and I had to create 2 versions with slightly different colouring to see which one goes well with my back cover.

Digipak - Improved CD Design

To improve my design for the CD I have drawn some doodle illustration (similar to music video's graphics) onto paper and then scanned it on to the computer to incorporate into my design. 


I created 2 designs with the illustration.

This is my favourite because it looks less confusing and it fits the genre more.

Digipak - CD Design

As I was thinking how I could create the CD design, I thought of using balloons (which is one of the codes and conventions of the artist) as the background and the CD cover just like how Katy Perry used candy and doughnut as hers for Teenage Dream. 


However, I thought the CD did not stand out therefore I made it white and written the title and artists' name on it instead. I might also improve the design by adding illustration drawings around the CD to make it more interesting.

Digipak - Lyrics Page

For my lyrics page in the digipak I wanted to include pictures of the artist like they do in other digipaks I looked at. I have chosen to use some of the photos that we took during our Brick Lane shooting. 

One of the problems was that the lyrics for the song is quite long therefore I had to find a way to make it easily visible but still look good so I thought of splitting it into 2 pages that will be in the centre of the digipak so it will be right next to each other when opened up. I also chose photos that have the artist on one side so I could place them together and put the lyrics on the side that more empty.

Another problem I had was that the background is quite colourful and vibrant therefore the lyrics didn't show up well, even when using a different colour from the background. I had to create a box to place behind the lyrics and lower the opacity so the lyrics could be shown. 

Here is my first attempt. However, I did not like the way 'Brokenhearted Lyrics' looked when joined the 2 pages together therefore I had to change something to make it work.

To improve from the previous attempt I have made 'Brokenhearted' bigger and deleted 'Lyrics' which made it appear to be much more attractive. I have also applied a glow to the title so it will show up better.

Digipak - Final Front Album Cover

This is the final version and I've chose to use a softer colour scheme for the album cover. I wanted the colours to match the colour scheme of the music video therefore I used pastel colours. Firstly, I made the background of the photo lighter and increased the contrast of her. I then pasted on some of the balloons again so the cover is not so white. Since there is a lack of yellow therefore I used a pastel yellow colour for the title with her name in black to make it stand out. I also applied the technique of duplicating some parts of the image to make it stand out that I learned from creating my second practise cover. I like this version better than the first and second one because I think it makes her seem much happier, which is what she is supposed to be like - matching the theme. I also think this cover work very well with a cut out album casing that allows either her name or her face to show through the front.

Digipak Templates

I went on Disk Wizard to get a 6 panel template for my design. Although the template is correct but it only came in a PDF version so I needed to input all the information again on Photoshop and create a new template there.
 
 
After searching around I have found another website called Disk Makers which also have the same kind of templates. The templates come in all different kind of Adobe designing software such as Photoshop, Illustrator, In Design and others which made it easier when designing.

 
I wasn't sure which one I wanted to use yet so I downloaded both the 4 panel and 6 panel just in case. If I have more photos to include in my digipak then I'll use the 6 panel but if 6 panel is not needed then a 4 panel digipak will also be good.
