Star Image - Katy Perry

How Katy Perry Constructed Her Star Image.

The genre of Katy Perry's songs is pop, rock with the theme of sex, love and women.
The style of her music videos range from girly, high tech, graphic and modern/ historical but they all follow a common structure of being over the top with everything. For example, in 'I Kissed A Girl' she is represented as likes to party and girly whereas in 'Unconditionally' she is mystical and fantasy-like. It is obvious that as she got more fame and power her budget for her music videos also go up. In 'I Kissed A Girl' the costume and sets are quite simple and can be achieved with average budget. However with one of her later videos like 'Roar' a lot more costume/makeup changing, extreme set ups and special effects has gone into it.

In terms of music, she started with her real name 'Katy Hudson' and created an album under that name with the genre Christian rock, contemporary. This album was created under the agency Red Hill Records. It was given positive ratings from professionals such as Billboard and AllMusic. However this album was not very successful as not much people know about it although it was given positive ratings and at this point she wasn't popular at all.

This album was a huge contrast to ones she makes now in terms of music style, the 'image', everything. She gained her fame after changing her album releasing company to Capitol Music Group which changed her whole image to a strong, independent women - a total contrast to the weak, inspiring girl with Red Hill Records. She started out with the album 'One of the Boys' in 2008 which made it to the top pop/rock songs on the chart.

As you can see from the album covers, there was a huge difference. There was much more budget invested in the later albums - much more photoshopping, a set up theme and even her image like her make up and hair has changed. The make up and hair is much bolder which connotes the 'strong' image the company tries to create. She also wear more revealing and bold coloured clothes to stand out and fit into her 'sex symbol' and 'men fantasy' roles that was ascribed to her by the public. Her styling also developed future with the help from the best hair stylist, make up artist, and costume artist as she got more well known.

The more popular she is, the more extreme she goes with her costume and make up. She is almost another Lady Gaga in terms of the way she dress. This creates the idea that she is a girl who is willing to try and explore which is what everyone wants to see as it is new and exciting. This is another great way to get known by the public and be talked about constantly to maintain her fame despite the songs.

These behind the scenes videos show how much the 'team' has planned for her image and how to express her in a positive way that the public will accept but yet find interesting. What she says is also planned to make sure she keep her image. They also try make her as innocent and nice as possible to avoid the public disagreeing and starts hating her.

It's hard to keep the stars on the front page all the time so they are always talked about somewhat positively. This is why the media sometime make up stories or make a certain situation bigger to be on the tabloids. For example, the recent story about how Katy Perry thinks that Taylor Swift's new song 'Bad Blood' is about her and the jealousy between the two with Harry Styles from One Direction. These are all from the star's team promoting their star by creating the word of mouth. Sometimes they might even give 'stories' to paparazzi so they can be on the tabloids and be gossiped about.

Genre - Pop

As a group, we have decided to go with pop as our genre. We also have some songs in mind that we think are appropriate such as 'Die Young' by Ke$ha and 'Broken Hearted' by Karmin.

After further discussion we have decided to go ahead with 'Broken Hearted' by Karmin because it has a stronger bond to pop. We also believe it can turn out to be more interesting by reversing the story of the song.

Rank Order of Previous Student's Work

Rank Order

1) 13B6 (Ike & Tine - Jamie T)
The lip sync was on point and the storyline was interesting. They also had good continuity editing, especially with the shots of the letter.

2) 13A2 (Life Happens - Brandon & Leah)
Good framing and the extreme close up of lips/teeth was effective.

3) 13E6 (Today I Cried - Professor Green)
Good shots and cuts were tight. Performer also suits the theme of the music very well.

4) 13E4 (If You Wanna - The Vaccines)
Editing needs to be tighter but they had good extreme close up shots and effects.

5) 13A3 (Nine2Five - The Ordinary Boys)
Lip sync was a bit off but the choice of the background was interesting.

6) 13E7 (12 Rounds - Jester)
Editing needs to be tighter and can be improved; for example the drop can be quicker to make it more effective and up beat.

7) 13B4 (Lost - Paper Aeroplanes)
The flaring of the sun was too much which made the shot too grainy and smoky looking. Some shots were also too zoomed out and lost its power.

8) 13B1 (Rewind - Paolo Nutini)
Lip sync was off and more energy needed. The shot of the guitar was a bit off screen at the beginning.

9) 13B3 (What We Started - J R Aquino)
The rain made it hard to see when it comes to lip syncing. There were some good close ups, however they need to include more of the singing from performer and less story shots.

10) 13E9 (Today I Cried - Professor Green)
Using exacts from film made it look unprofessional and more close up needed, especially when singing. Lip sync also need to be improved and more energy.

11) 13A1 (Sparks Fly - Taylor Swift)
Camera were shaky at some point and the random transition throughout the video made it very unprofessional. Some graphic match was also done wrongly which made it look bad. There were a few repeated shots when it wasn't needed and it just looks like they didn't put enough effort in it. Lip Sync was also off in some shots.

What Have I Learnt?

  • I have learnt that the song choice is best when it's not too slow.
  • Avoid love stories.
  • Lip sync needs to on point.
  • Film one shot for the full song, especially close up of performer singing to allow editing to be smoother.
  • Be careful of the lighting used. For example, flaring of sunlight or artificial light can't be too much in the shot.
  • Use transitions correctly. Don't use transitions like the diamond or ripple effect.
  • Avoid fields and schools (unless part of story)
  • Works best with close ups
  • The energy is very important with performer.
  • Don't repeat shots unless it is essential.

Review of AS Project

What Went Well?

With our AS project 'One Step Ahead', I think the location choice and costume went very well as it matches the importance of the codes and conventions for a burglary film. Also the continuity editing were smooth within the whole video which made it more effective. We also used a wide range of shots within the sequence which again made it more interesting for the viewer and it will be something essential for us to do when it comes to our music video, therefore it is good that we already have practise.

How can we Improve...

We can improve on the lighting as some scenes were not light enough which result it to be grainy as we have to lighten it during post-production. We can also try using gel filters to create different effects. Another thing that I believe that we can improve on is the title animation at the beginning. I believe it can be more interesting and creative if we have more time on it.

PS: The background music were cut out when we upload it on YouTube for some reason.
